ABOUT: Frank Hamer (March 17, 1884 - July 10, 1955)

Texas Ranger Hall Of Fame and Museum    Francis Augustus (Frank) Hamer (1884 - 1955)

Texas Historical Foundation     Francis Augustus (Frank) Hamer (1884 - 1955)

Frank Hamer was born in Fairview, Wilson County, Texas, where his father operated a blacksmith shop. He was one of five brothers, four of whom became Texas Rangers. Frank Hamer first joined the Texas Rangers in Captain John H. Rogers Company C in Alpine, Texas on April 21, 1906, and began patrolling the border with Mexico, resigning from the Texas Rangers off and on to take other law enforcement related jobs throughout his life.

In 1934 at the go-ahead from Governor Ferguson, Simmons persuaded Frank Hamer to accept an assignment to hunt down the Barrow Gang. Upon accepting the assignment, Frank Hamer was (according to his own account) commissioned as an officer of the Texas Highway Patrol, then seconded to the prison system as a special investigator charged with apprehending Barrow and his colleagues. At 9:15 a.m. on May 23, 1934, after 102 days of shadowing, hunter and hunted finally met on a desolate rural road near Gibsland, Louisiana.

Clyde Barrow stopped his car at the ambush spot and the posse's 150-round fusillade was so thunderous that people for miles around thought a logging crew had used dynamite to fell a particularly huge tree. During the later 1930 decade Frank Hamer applied his skills in keeping the civil peace on behalf of various oil companies and shippers, generally as a strike breaker.

After two recalls to Texas Ranger Duty Frank Hamer finally was in complete retirement by 1949. Ranger Frank Hamer had a stroke in 1953 and he passed away in Austin,TX in 1955 at 71 years of age. In his life Frank Hamer was wounded 17 times and left for dead on 4 occasions, also involved in over 50 gunfights during is illustrious career, Frank Hamer is credited with having killed between 53 and 70 people in the line of duty.
