Derringer Clip On Western Holster

Our clip derringer holster is a handsome hand tooled floral carved version of J W Townsend's 1906 hip pocket holster which he had to patent because he came up with the idea of adding a metal clip to the holster, making it easier to carry and conceal either a small derringer or a "suicide special" which was a small, inexpensive revolver of the times. 

The holster had two functions, the first being concealment of the weapon and the second kept in a readily available yet securely safe position.The derringer or hip pocket holster was small enough and conformed to most pockets, some styles even had loops to carry extra bullets which kept them readily available for re-loading.
 
The Hip Pocket Holster continued it's evolution through the early 1900's and was used more in the east than the west although it was extremely popular with western bankers and businessmen. The holster seems to have been created in the east and then moved on into the western territories and states as time went on. By adding the clip to the holster JW Townsend found the holster was easier to conceal and less likely to move around when holstered inside a vest pocket or to the inside pocket of a jacket or even on a belt.
